I found this old camera in an antiques market in Gloucester. It's a Kodak Retinette IA. It was made in 1959.
I paid £11 for it, in '59 this would have cost £45. 45 1959 pounds is £700 in 2007 money!
I love the old leather case, the way it's made to sit permanently in the case, and just undo the top and pivot it round. The leather is worn in all the right places, and it smells like an old car for some reason.
I wonder who used to own this camera, and what it's been pointed at in the intervening 48 years.
The poor thing is in need of some repair, as the shutter is stuck closed, (very common I gather) but I'm hoping it can be re-lubricated easily enough, and I'll get a roll of kodachrome and give it one last hurrah.

I just bought the same. Lovely camera.
It's working! But viewfinder is missing one lens, so while looking through it there's a blurry image. Also leather is broken somewhere and the rust shown up.
But I'm going to restore it. I can give you a sign when I'm done if you are interested.
